Dummy text, also known as placeholder text, is a piece of text used in graphic design, web design, and other applications as a temporary placeholder for actual content. Dummy text is often used when creating design layouts or prototypes to represent where text will be placed in a design. Dummy text can be generated manually or through online tools, and is typically composed of nonsensical (Latin-like) words and phrases such as “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit.” (more on Lorem ipsum here)
The use of dummy text both gives a design draft a more realistic feel and helps focus on the overall layout of a design without being distracted by the text content. Once the design is finalised, the dummy text is of course replaced with real content.
This is where copywriting comes in.
