A pixel, short for “picture element”, is the smallest unit of a digital image that can be displayed on a screen or printed on paper. Pixels are tiny square-shaped dots that are arranged in a grid to form an image. Each pixel represents a specific colour or shade of grey, and the combination of pixels in an image creates the overall visual appearance of the image. The total number of pixels in the image is expressed as width x height (e.g. 1920 x 1080), which indicates its resolution. Higher resolution images have more pixels, and therefore more detail and clarity. Pixels are used in various digital media, including photographs, graphics and video, and are an essential concept in digital design and imaging.
