We were commissioned by Lehner Lifttechnik to redevelop the design of a platform stairlift for indoor use. We analysed the use of the lifts from various perspectives in order to achieve improvements in accessibility, safety, ergonomics and aesthetics through product design.
It goes without saying that a stairlift itself should maximise accessibility – but there are also aspects of accessibility in the handling of the lift. These include, for example, optimising the grab handle so that it is easy to hold on to even with limited finger mobility. The platform lighting and the flaps for easy access to the platform were also optimised.
The same applies to the larger display, which facilitates handling for those with impaired vision and stiff fingers.
In addition to the revised positioning of the emergency stop button, another safety feature has also been improved: The side panelling of the lift which, when touched, causes the lift to stop immediately to prevent injuries.
Stair and platform lifts should integrate as seamlessly as possible into the living space. Therefore, our aim was to make the lift look like an elegant piece of furniture or technical product when folded up, which visually enhances the living space but still blends discreetly into the background. To this end, several design variants were developed for the safety bars and the body of the lift.
