A tag is a variable within an HMI or SCADA system that represents and processes system or process data. A tag can, for example, represent a temperature value, rotational speed or the status of a machine component.

Tags can be directly linked to variables in a controller or used internally within the HMI or SCADA system. They therefore form an important link between process data and the user interface.
