ENGEL viper redesign

01
Concept development

The concept phase was driven by the technical evolution of the viper series towards a modular system architecture. The objective was to economically combine different sizes, axis configurations and weight classes.

The design process therefore extended beyond formal considerations to include material usage, standard components, logistics and assembly.

Through multiple iterations, distinct design directions were developed that balance functionality, modularity and brand identity.

02
Key sketch

The key sketch translates the technical requirements into a clear design direction, based on the selected concept (B). It continues the defining characteristics of the established viper design while integrating new conditions such as modularity across all size classes.

Lighter moving components, reduced material thicknesses and the targeted use of plastic cladding contribute to overall weight reduction.

The result is a strong visual guideline that combines functionality, efficiency and recognizability.

03
Prototypes

During development, various design approaches and construction details were evaluated through prototypes. Particular focus was placed on the integration of standard components and the precise implementation of the modular structure.

Design elements such as the characteristic cut-outs in the X-beam were refined and adapted across different robot models. Prototyping enabled the early alignment of function, manufacturing and design.

05
Trade fair

The new generation of ENGEL viper linear robots was unveiled at K 2025, the world’s leading trade fair for plastics and rubber machinery.

The exhibition clearly demonstrated how the modular product strategy and the refined design work together to form a coherent product family with high flexibility for diverse production requirements.

Visitors were able to directly experience both the technical and design advancements of the series.
